The Optare Solo SR is a midibus / single-deck low‐entry bus built by Optare (now Switch Mobility).
The “SR” stands for “Solo SR”, which is a modernized body style of the original Solo, introduced with upgraded styling, interiors, and mechanical options.
The M9250SR is a specific length/specification within the Solo SR range. The “9250” usually refers to the approximate total length (in mm) around 9.25 m (so ~ 9.2-9.3m).
Engine: Mercedes‐Benz OM904LA
Four‐cylinder, turbocharged diesel with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) to meet emissions standards.
Torque: ~ 610 Nm up to around 675 Nm in some spec, particularly in the mid-range rpm (around 1200-1600 rpm).
Gearbox: Allison (2100 series)
The Allison gearbox used in many Solo SRs with the Mercedes engine is a fully automatic Allison 2100 Series transmission.
There is a “lock-up” feature in higher gears (i.e. once at cruise speed, to improve fuel efficiency) and often ancillary equipment like a retarder (electromagnetic or engine retarder) to help braking and reduce wear on service brakes.
Suspension & axles: Front is air‐suspended (2 bags) with leading taper leaf springs & Panhard rod; rear is Albion single reduction hypoid axle with ratio around 4.10:1 in many cases.
Entrance height (floor) is low entry, often with kneeling suspension (to help with accessibility).
Wheelchair access: Many are PSVAR compliant (i.e. UK regulation for accessibility), with provision for a wheelchair, manual or hydraulic ramp or fold out ramp.
The OM904LA + Allison 2100 combo is considered a reliable setup for service buses: good torque in low-to-mid RPMs (helpful in stop-start traffic), automatic gearbox reduces driver fatigue.
The low entry/kneeling makes boarding easier for passengers, especially those with reduced mobility.
Maintenance is facilitated in part by the “power pack” concept: many mechanical ancillaries (cooling, exhaust, etc) are modular or clustered to allow relatively easier servicing.
